- Heavy Rain Review
Well, I expect to catch flak for this one. While I willingly admit that Heavy Rain is both beautiful and impressive, I simply don't think it's a very good video game. In fact, I'm not sure that was it's goal.
When the developers start referring to their title more as interactive fiction than a video game, you can see the direction the project is headed.
While there are plenty of reviewers who have Heavy Rain perfect to near perfect scores, I have to ask them what their criteria was. My review of Heavy Rain admits that it is special, but that doesn't mean it's a good game.

- Sony Patents New Video Game Demo Technology
It looks like Sony will be rolling out "Degradable" video game demos, and they have patented the idea.Essentially a degradable demo would be a system where the player would get the full game, and access to it, but that it would "downgrade" either over time or with a certain number of plays.
So, you may see levels disabled, perhaps the car would run slower, or your sword would cease to do damage. What's the advantage, you may ask?
Well, you get to preview the final build of the game, and Sony can distribute the entire games en masse on disc, then sell "unlock" codes for cheaper than distributing separate demo and game discs.
My question is, well, this seems familiar... have any of you seen this already? I've seen timed demos, but degradeble ones? Seems very, very familiar.

- Sony Computer Entertainment Purchases Media Molecule
Well that settles that, Sack Boy and his creators no longer simply live in the PlayStation Nation, they are owned by it.
It what appears to be a very savvy move by Sony, they have scooped up the creators of LittleBigPlanet, making Media Molecule a first-party developer for the PlayStation family of game consoles.
May the marriage be a happy one that produces lots of Sack Boy offspring for the rest of us to admire.

- Heavy Rain Movie Rights Already Optioned, In 2006?
New Line Cinema has bought the rights for the "interactive fiction" game Heavy Rain... quite some time ago actually.According to a link provided via Joystiq, it looks like the game's movie rights were sold all the way back in 2006, just after the early Heavy Rain "casting" trailer was shown at E3 that year.
Now, this doesn't mean that there is going to be a Heavy Rain movie, only that if there is that either New Line Cinema will produce it, or that another company will have to purchase the rights from them.
The dark detective game is so good, one has to wonder if a film could do it justice, or if we'd end up with another Max Payne movie.

- God of War III Requires No HDD Installation
The gods have smiled upon us. Unlike Devil May Cry IV, or more recently, Heavy Rain, God of War III will require no hard drive installation. That's right, you can stick the disc in your system and play God of War without having to a) wait, or b) worry about having 8 gigs free on your PS3 hard drive. It gets even better. Christer Ericson, director of technology at Sony Santa Monica, has stated that the save game files will also only be a mere 5 megs. It's almost like the old days, when you could play console games without hard drives, and all you needed was an megabyte memory card (or two).
God of War III is an amazing looking game, and it's nice to know that Sony seems to care not only about Kratos, et al, but also our game experience. No install and fast loads means happy mortals.

- BioShock 2 Review
The sequel to one of the most memorable first-person shooters has you putting on the diving boots of a Big Daddy, the iconic thoughies of the original BioShock. But how does that fare?BioShock 2 not only has you playing a bigger, badder character, but the game is expansive and grand... yet very, very familiar.
In my review I take a look at the return to Rapture and ask, does BioShock 2 live up to the legacy, or is it a soggy rehash?

- Final Fantasy VII HD Remake? Impossible
Or at least improbable. In an interview largely about Final Fantasy XIII, Yoshinori Kitase, the game's producer stated that it was "unrealistic" to remake Final Fantasy VII with the glorious HD graphics of FFXIII.
Kitase explained that Final Fantasy XIII took three plus years to make, and due to the scope, Final Fantasy VII would take three to four times as long to create. That means in order to recreate a version of FFVII with the production values of FFXIII would be a decade, or so, long process. Unrealistic, seems to be an appropriate word.
It's not that the interest isn't there. Kitase mentioned that if the facilities and team existed that could crank out FFVII HD in a year, they'd certainly be into doing it.
So here's hoping for a shift in the way animation is done, or some other magical tech falls from the sky that would make productions of a Final Fantasy game faster. Until such time, keep watching Advent Children... it's as close as we are going to get to seeing Cloud and Co. in 1080p anytime soon.

The only problem with the AVP video games is that they seem to name them each the same things. Regardless, the new one looks far better, and far more frightening than the rest.

- Happy Valentines Day! Give Flower For Half-Off
Romance is in the air, as are discounts.
Unlike the real world, where the price of flowers skyrocket for Valentines day, on the PlayStation network it's half-price day.
thatgamecompany, on the heels of their free download of flOw yesterday, is offering their hit game Flower for $4.99.
So, if you need a last minute gift, don't buy a convenience store rose (that never works), buy her Flower, and tell her you wanted to give her something she'd love and want her to share in your hobby.
You're welcome, Romeo.
